How to use the hourly paycheck calculator

    1. Enter your hourly rate.
    2. Enter the regular hours you work in a typical week.
    3. Add weekly overtime hours if you usually work them.
    4. Choose weekly, biweekly, semi-monthly, or monthly pay.
    5. Read your gross pay for each period. These figures are before taxes.

Example: $22 per hour, 40 hours, 5 overtime hours

At $22 per hour with 40 regular hours and 5 overtime hours at 1.5x, weekly gross pay is 40 x $22 = $880 plus 5 x $33 = $165, for $1,045. Over 52 weeks that is $54,340 per year. Paid biweekly, each paycheck is $2,090 gross. Paid semi-monthly it is about $2,264.17, and the monthly average is about $4,528.33.

How gross paycheck pay is estimated

Weekly gross pay equals rate times regular hours plus rate times the overtime multiplier times overtime hours. Yearly gross pay is the weekly amount times 52. Each paycheck is the yearly amount divided by the number of pay periods: 52 for weekly, 26 for biweekly, 24 for semi-monthly, and 12 for monthly. Federal and state taxes, Social Security, Medicare, and benefits are not subtracted.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my paycheck from an hourly rate?

Multiply your hourly rate by the hours worked in the pay period. Add overtime pay at your higher rate if it applies. The total is your gross pay.

What is the difference between gross and net pay?

Gross pay is what you earn before deductions. Net pay is what you take home after taxes, insurance, retirement contributions, and other deductions.

How many paychecks are there in a year?

Weekly pay has 52 paychecks, biweekly has 26, semi-monthly has 24, and monthly has 12.

Why is biweekly pay different from semi-monthly pay?

Biweekly pays every two weeks, giving 26 paychecks. Semi-monthly pays twice a month, giving 24 larger paychecks. Yearly pay is the same.

Does this show my take-home pay?

No. It estimates gross pay only. Use your pay stub or a tax withholding tool for take-home pay.
