Example: adding three days and subtracting from 40 hours

Add 7 hours 45 minutes, 8 hours 30 minutes and 6 hours 15 minutes. 7:45 plus 8:30 is 16:15, and adding 6:15 gives 22 hours 30 minutes, which is 22.50 in decimal hours. To see how much of a 40-hour week is left, start with 40:00 and subtract 36:20 to get 3 hours 40 minutes.

How hours and minutes are added

Each amount is converted to minutes by multiplying the hours by 60 and adding the minutes. Amounts that are added increase the total and amounts that are subtracted decrease it. The total minutes are then split back into hours and minutes by dividing by 60, and the decimal hours are the total minutes divided by 60. If the total would be negative, it is shown as zero.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I add hours and minutes?

Add the minutes first. If they come to 60 or more, carry whole hours over to the hours column. Then add the hours. 7:45 plus 8:30 is 15 hours 75 minutes, which is 16 hours 15 minutes.

How do I subtract hours and minutes?

Convert both amounts to minutes, subtract, then convert back. 40:00 minus 36:20 is 2,400 minus 2,180 minutes, which is 220 minutes or 3 hours 40 minutes.

How do I convert hours and minutes to decimal hours?

Divide the minutes by 60 and add them to the hours. 22 hours 30 minutes is 22.5 hours. The decimal hours calculator on this site has a full conversion chart.

Can I use this for a timesheet?

Yes. Add each day's hours and minutes to get the weekly total, then use the decimal result to multiply by your hourly rate.

Does it work for times of day?

It adds and subtracts lengths of time, not clock times. To find the length between a start and end time, use the work hours calculator.
