How to use the overtime calculator

    1. Enter your regular hourly rate.
    2. Enter your regular hours for the week.
    3. Enter your overtime hours. The multiplier is 1.5 by default and you can change it.
    4. Enter any double time hours. The multiplier is 2 by default.
    5. Read each pay amount and the total.

Example: $18 per hour with 6 overtime hours

Suppose you earn $18 per hour and work 40 regular hours, 6 overtime hours at 1.5x, and 2 double time hours at 2x. Regular pay is 40 x $18 = $720. Your overtime rate is $18 x 1.5 = $27, so overtime pay is 6 x $27 = $162. Double time is $36 per hour, so 2 hours pays $72. Total gross pay is $954.

    The overtime pay formula

Overtime pay equals overtime hours times your hourly rate times the overtime multiplier. Time and a half uses a multiplier of 1.5 and double time uses 2. Total pay is regular pay plus overtime pay plus double time pay. Your overtime hourly rate is simply your regular rate times the multiplier.

When do I get double time?

It depends on your employer, contract, and state. Some workplaces pay double time on holidays or after a certain number of hours in a day. Check your own agreement.

When does overtime start in the US?

Federal rules generally require overtime pay for non-exempt employees after 40 hours in a workweek. Some states also count daily hours.

    Does this calculator include taxes?

No. Results are gross pay before taxes and deductions.

    Do salaried employees get overtime?

It depends on whether the job is exempt or non-exempt. Many salaried employees are exempt and do not receive overtime, but some salaried roles are non-exempt and do. Rules depend on duties and salary level, so confirm with your employer or your state labor department.
