Track My Hours at Work: A Quick Shift Checklist

Published · Updated

Starting a shift now? Use this quick checklist to track your hours before you forget the details. Keep it beside your time clock or save it on your phone. It covers today's record only; for calculations, overnight shifts and paycheck checks, use the complete work-hours tracking method.

Before you begin

  • Open your usual log or time clock.
  • Select the correct job or client.
  • Record today's date and your actual start time, not the scheduled start.

When you take a break

  • Record when an unpaid break starts and ends.
  • Keep paid breaks separate; don't subtract them as unpaid time.

Before you leave

  • Record your actual finish time.
  • Check that the date, job and breaks are right.
  • Save the entry. If a time is missing, flag it now rather than guessing.
