How Many Hours Did I Work This Week?
It's Thursday, and you want to know: how many hours have I worked this week? Maybe you're close to overtime, trying to plan your paycheck, or just want to know if you can leave early Friday. Here's how to figure it out fast, and how to never have to wonder again.
Step 1: Know when your workweek starts
Your workweek isn't always Monday to Sunday. Many employers use a fixed seven-day period that starts on another day, like Wednesday or Saturday. Check your pay stub, schedule or handbook. Overtime is usually figured on this workweek, not the calendar week.
Step 2: Gather each day's start and end times
Use whatever you have:
- Your own notes or tracking app
- Your employer's timeclock or scheduling app
- Your posted schedule, adjusted for any changes
- Texts or messages that show when you started and left
Step 3: Calculate each day
For each shift, subtract the start time from the end time, then subtract unpaid breaks. Our step-by-step guide on how to calculate hours worked walks through the math, including overnight shifts.
Step 4: Add the days together
Add hours and minutes separately, then turn every 60 minutes into an hour. Convert the total to decimal if you want to estimate pay. See how to convert time to decimal.
A quick example
- Monday: 8 hours 15 minutes
- Tuesday: 7 hours 50 minutes
- Wednesday: 9 hours 10 minutes
- Thursday so far: 6 hours 30 minutes
Total: 30 hours and 105 minutes, which is 31 hours 45 minutes, or 31.75 hours. With one more 8-hour shift you'd land at 39.75, just under weekly overtime.
Step 5: Check where you stand on overtime
If you're near 40 hours, or near a daily limit, you'll want to know before your last shift. See how to calculate overtime pay.
The no-math way
If you track your shifts in an app, your weekly total is always one glance away. Hours Tracker Time Clock shows:
- Your running total for the week, updated live while you're clocked in
- Your earnings so far, overtime included
- A calendar with each day's hours, earnings and overtime markers
- Days you missed, so a forgotten shift doesn't throw off your total
And with the home-screen widget, you can see your live timer and logged days without even opening the app.
